This one isn't a personal story like the others on the blog, I haven't collected my own yet about asking a boss for a raise. But it's something I see over and over with people I talk to, so I want to think it through out loud anyway.

Most people don't avoid asking for a raise out of laziness or a lack of confidence. They avoid it because nobody taught them what to actually say. "I deserve to earn more" is a feeling. It's not a case. And walking into an important conversation with a feeling instead of a case is exactly what makes it feel impossible.

Here's what actually works, and it isn't complicated: your manager doesn't remember everything you did all year, they remember what stuck. Doing your job well isn't what earns you a raise, that's the baseline, it's why they keep scheduling you. The question your manager is actually asking isn't "who works hardest." It's "how hard would it be to replace this person."

That's a very specific question, and it has a very specific answer: two or three concrete examples of why you'd be hard to replace, not your job description. A moment where something would have gone wrong without you. And an ask stated directly, not buried inside a paragraph of explanation.

Why I'm telling you this

I turned this into a full course with the exact structure, real examples from people in retail, offices, and construction, the AI prompts that help pull out your own examples, and the word-for-word script for the conversation. If you've ever put off asking for a raise because you didn't know where to start, this is exactly where to start. axtorra.com/products/pedir-aumento/
