You've got fifty open tabs you're going to read "later." Three AI newsletters you signed up for and check, if you're lucky, once a month. You watched half of a conference talk before a meeting pulled you away. You feel like you're staying on top of things, and you still aren't any better at using AI than you were six months ago. The problem isn't that you're not learning anything. It's that you're collecting information, not building real capability.

Why this matters

AI changes every week. What's new today is just normal in a few months. If you wait until you "need" a skill to learn it, you're already behind. And nobody's going to fix this for you: your employer's own training is probably behind too. You need your own system, one that doesn't depend on how fast your organization moves.

Fewer newsletters, not more

Pick one. The best one for your field. Cancel the rest. This isn't about reading more, it's about reading the right thing and actually using it. A simple system that works:

  • Monday through Wednesday (5 minutes): skim that one newsletter. Only what's relevant, nothing else.
  • Thursday (30 minutes): one real tutorial or case study, something you can actually apply, not just theory.
  • Friday (15 minutes): use something you learned this week. Try it on your own work.

That's fifteen minutes a day, a little over an hour and a half a week. It sounds small. After a few months of consistency, it isn't.

Pick the lane that actually fits you

There's no single right way to learn this:

  • If you learn by doing: start with a tutorial, build something imperfect today, and learn the concept while you use it.
  • If you learn by understanding first: read the explanation before you try it, build the full picture in your head, then apply it.
  • If you learn socially: find a community or a study group, learn by talking it through and teaching it, not alone at a screen.

Use whatever's natural for you. Don't force yourself to learn the way someone else does.

Try this right now (five minutes)

Pick one newsletter in your field and cancel the rest right now. Put a fifteen-minute block on your calendar for tomorrow, same time every day. Decide which of the three lanes above actually fits you. And pick, right now, what you'll look at Thursday. That's the whole system. Simple, sustainable, and it adds up week after week.

Reading about AI isn't the same as knowing how to use it. The difference is whether what you learn this week actually reaches your work, not just another open tab.

¿Y una vez que aprendiste algo, qué?And once you've actually learned something, then what?

A reading habit is step one. The Getting Started with AI guide ($12) is step two: the Interview Method, one repeatable habit for turning what you just learned into something you actually built this week, not another saved tab.
