Por qué me daba miedo darle clic a "Empezar" en la IA Why I Was Afraid to Click "Start" on AI

No pasó nada dramático.

For a long time, I told myself I didn't have time to learn AI. That was the polite version. The real version is that I was scared of it.

Not scared like a robot uprising. Scared in the smaller, more embarrassing way. Scared I'd ask it something and get a wrong answer and not know enough to catch it. Scared everyone else already knew how to use it and I was going to be the one person still faking it.

Here's the part I don't usually say out loud: I didn't start using AI because I had some big vision for it. I started because I'd been put on an AI committee at work, and I hadn't contributed anything to it, and I was afraid my boss was going to notice and be upset with me. That's it. That's the honest reason. Not curiosity. Not strategy. Fear of getting caught not knowing something I was supposed to already know.

Around the same time, a friend kept after me about it too. She'd show me things she was doing with AI, little things, and ask why I hadn't tried it yet. It wasn't a big pitch, she just kept bringing it up and kept showing me what it could actually do. Between the two of those things, being afraid of looking bad at work and watching someone I trusted use it in front of me, I finally opened a tool and typed in a question.

Nothing dramatic happened. I didn't have a breakthrough. I just got an answer, and it was useful enough that I asked it something else the next day. That's really the whole arc. I didn't get brave first and then try AI. I got cornered by circumstances, tried it out of self-preservation, and only later realized it was actually useful.

I think a lot of people are stuck exactly where I was, and I think a lot of the AI content out there skips this part because it's not inspiring. Nobody wants to admit they started because they were afraid of looking behind at work, or because a friend wouldn't stop showing them something until they finally tried it themselves. But that's honestly how most people start anything new. You don't wait until you feel ready. Something external pushes you, and you go do the thing you'd been avoiding for reasons that had nothing to do with the tool itself.

If that's where you are right now, worried about being the one who hasn't figured this out yet, or hearing from someone else that you're missing out, that's a completely normal way to start. You don't need a better reason than the one you already have.

Pick the one task this week that's been sitting on your plate because you don't know where to start. Type it into an AI tool as a question. See what comes back. You can ignore the answer if it's not useful. You can't learn anything from a question you never asked.

Where to start

If you want a plainer starting point, we put together a free guide called "Why Do I Want to Use AI?" that walks through figuring out where AI might actually help you, before you worry about how to use it. It's free in the resource library on the site. And if you get past that first question and want somewhere to go next, "Getting Started with AI" ($12) is a straightforward guide to which tool to use for what, with ready-to-use scripts so you're not starting from a blank box every time.

Might be worth a look, especially if your version of that AI committee is still sitting on your to-do list.
