Cómo Gano DineroHow I Made Money

The Job Where I Learned to Ask for What I Needed

At the SUU Cafeteria, my job was stocking chips and then drinks in a cooler. A normal shift meant walking in, seeing what needed restocking, writing it down on a post-it note, going to the stockroom, finding the replacements, hauling them back out, and shelving them first in, first out. Nothing complicated. I did it completely alone.

Working alone, with nobody watching

Nobody else did what I did at the hour I did it. My supervisor wasn't there during my shift, and most of the time the only way we talked was through notes. If I actually needed to find her, I had to go in outside my work hours. So I just did my job and didn't worry about anything else. If I ran out of something, I left a note. If I needed a day off, I did the work early or arranged to do it at a different time. Nobody was there to cover for me or notice if something slipped. It was just mine.

When the schedule didn't work for me

They wanted me coming in late at night, and that genuinely made me uncomfortable. It was a big building, almost empty at that hour, and I was there alone, as a young woman. I didn't like the idea of a predictable schedule, alone at night. So I asked my supervisor if I could come in earlier instead, right before the cafeteria opened, since mornings worked a lot better for me than nights. She made the arrangement. It was no big deal to her. It was huge to me.

What I still use

What stuck with me wasn't stocking coolers. It was that arrangements can be made, and that asking costs you nothing. You won't always get exactly what you asked for, but you don't know until you ask. That's saved me more times since then than I can count, at work and outside of it.

This is Part 3 of How I Made Money, the series where every job I've had gets its own story. If you missed them, Part 1 was about my very first job at Arctic Circle, and Part 2 was about the first time I had to fire someone, at the Alta Canyon snack bar.
